Is Instagram enough, or do I need a website?

When Instagram does the job on its own, when it starts costing you customers, and what a website does that a profile can't — explained for business owners, not web developers.

This is the question I hear most often, and the honest answer is: it depends on what happens when someone looks for you without going through Instagram.

If they type your business name into Google and find your address, hours, services and a way to get in touch, Instagram might be enough for a while. If they find a profile with a link in bio, three photos from last month and a "DM us", you're losing customers who were already ready to buy.

When Instagram is enough

I'll be direct, because I don't want to sell a website to someone who doesn't need one:

  • You sell something visual and impulse-driven (sweets, clothing, decor) and DMs work for you
  • Your business is new and you're still figuring out what people want
  • You have time to post often and reply fast
  • Customers come by referral and just want to "have a look"

In those cases, polish the profile, put WhatsApp on the contact button and keep the website money for now.

When it starts costing you customers

The signs show up slowly:

You answer the same questions every day. Price, hours, address, "do you do X?". A website answers those while you serve someone else.

Customers need to trust you before paying. Clinics, law firms, schools, accountants, architects. Nobody signs a R$ 5,000 contract because of a carousel. People research on Google, and Google shows websites, not profiles.

You want to sell outside business hours. DMs need you awake. An online store with card payments doesn't.

Your reach dropped and you don't know why. Instagram changes the rules whenever it wants. A website is yours: nobody throttles its reach.

You're running ads. Sending paid traffic to a profile is paying for people to look at your photos. Sending it to a landing page is paying for them to leave their contact.

What a website does that a profile doesn't

InstagramWebsite
Shows up when people search "dentist near me"RarelyYes, if done right
Shows prices, services and hours in an organized wayIn highlights, if you maintain themAlways, on a page
Takes orders or bookings without youNoYes
Belongs to youNoYes
Needs a post every weekYesNo

Look at the last row. A business website doesn't need constant updates. It needs to be right. That's good news for anyone without time to create content.

It's not one or the other

The combination that works for most local businesses is simple: Instagram attracts and shows daily life; the website converts and builds trust. The link in bio goes to the site. The site has a WhatsApp button. People from Google find the site; people from the site find the profile. Neither one is overloaded.

Where to start without overspending

If you recognized two or more of the signs above, you don't need to start big:

  • Landing page (from R$ 1,200, 3–7 business days): one page with what you do, for whom, how much, and the contact button. Works for the link in bio and for ads.
  • Business website (from R$ 2,700, 10–20 business days): when you have more than one service, need to show up on Google and want a panel to update things yourself.
  • Online store (from R$ 5,000): when DMs have become a sales bottleneck.

Still unsure? Send me your profile link on WhatsApp. I'll tell you whether, in my opinion, a website is worth it now or worth waiting on. No commitment, no runaround: sometimes the answer is "not yet".
